REFLECTION: UNIT X LIVE

Unit X has been by far the best unit on the course so far. I am now going to explain and reflect on my engagement of the unit. Firstly, the lectures at the beginning of the unit really introduced me to what I was going to be doing. But not only did they clearly explain our task, but when listening to Noel Mellor- he did inspire me to really have a good go at the unit. I’m not going to lie, the other units on the course probably did not take my full efforts and abilities, but this unit definitely made me give my all. The idea of me writing a ‘blog’ started to settle in, but I still imagined myself struggling with it, just because it is something I’ve never done before. I then found out that my seminar tutor was the unit leader; Emily Brick and I felt a little pressure to do well. But the pressure definitely worked because it motivated me every week to try my hardest so that I was prepared for each seminar. I really appreciated finding out what my peers have been watching in the week prior to the seminar, it definitely influenced me to watch new things. For example, I can remember one seminar somebody telling me to watch 24; I have now started the series.

I can guarantee that I’m not the only student that loved going to the cinema screenings twice every week. It felt like a real treat as it isn’t often that I can afford to got to the cinema in my spare time, I would usually just watch films on the Internet. I also loved the fact that all my course friends could review the films after the screening, it made me look at films in whole different ways once I saw others perspectives. This is another reason why I enjoyed the seminars, I loved listening to other people and finding out their reflections of the films.

If I could change something I did during this unit it would be to leave my comfort zone a little more. Because the things I blogged about are typical me, I wish I could have challenged myself to blog about something completely different. Once I got into the swing of blogging, it was easy as pie. I think the thing that was easiest to me was making the posts more personal and informal so that it would appeal to a wide audience. The media I chose to blog about was usually spontaneous things that I’ve come across that week either by surfing the web or hearing things that my friends have been gossiping about. In addition, by following my friend’s blogs, we all got to comment on each others posts and give feedback. It gave me so much more confidence when I received good feedback from my peers. The main way we communicated was using social networking sites such as Facebook.

The hardest thing during blogging was remembering to blog straight after I’ve watched something. Otherwise, I forgot what to say about it. I can remember one night I woke up and had to write an idea down so that I didn’t forget in the morning.

Unit X has been a real eye-opener into a career path that I could possibly take. I have enjoyed every bit of it this unit.
